Statement
In her work, Martijntje van Schooten researches space. She deals with questions about borders and boundaries, often in relation to (the history or function of) architecture. She is particularly interested in that part of the room that is close to a boundary.
Martijntje van Schooten's installations often consist of wood or cardboard, with the addition of drawings, video or ceramic objects.
In her research, she peels space down to its essence and makes the invisible content visible - often by placing an installation in it. With this she gives access to a world that is located in that residual space. Such research requires residence time - in which looking, measuring and feeling are essential.
In line with her interest in space and boundaries, she is fascinated by 'the story in the built': the human stories or lives in a space, the displacement of the story when man leaves a space and how man experiences the built as a cover for his own story.
