Statement

Marie Lagrands’ visual language is a physical one. Her work starts from a sculptural point in combining object trouvés (objects, movement, landscape) to reveal the stillness of the particularity in the ordinary.
Displaying bodies in the work is important. She uses peoples’ corporal materiality as a medium to show ways of being. With a vocabulary of simple movement, she works with the concept that anything can be looked at as choreography, a system of movement and stillness. In her work, movement is disconnected from (its) meaning and brought to a halt. Maries’ research is on how regular movement relates to choreography and how much movement is minimally necessary to create tension. It builds on the act of being and thoughts of (our) physicality.
The work emerges into video, installation and performance.

Biography

Marie Lagrand (1971), graduated as a performer and theater maker from the Hoge School van de Kunsten Utrecht in 1998. She ran away from all artistry completely, only to return to the Rietveld to become a DOGtime UM graduate in 2022. Changing her mind constantly about wanting to be a dancer, choreographer, film maker, performer, artist or none of the above, she spends her Monday nights at the M O N D A G collective to try and find the answer.
